The Vicki Shiba Gallery offers collectors the opportunity to engage
with works of Asian art that project beauty, myth and magic.
A mainstay on the Asian and Tribal art scenes, Vicki has helped build
private and public collections throughout the world. Her gallery
features ritual objects, statues, textiles, carpets, baskets and
furniture from Tibet, Nepal, India, Indonesia, peninsular SE Asia,
China, Japan,
and the Pacific Rim. Himalayan painting and sculpture are her areas
of specialization.
"
During my student years I spent time in Tokyo," Shiba says. "I
loved going to art galleries and museums. That was the beginning
of a lifelong Asian adventure."
After three decades of frequent travel to Tibet, Nepal, India, Indonesia,
peninsular Southeast Asia, China and Japan Shiba does four or five
major shows each year, in San Francisco, New York and Santa Fe, New
Mexico.
"
Over time I've developed greater appreciation for everyday items
that emanate beauty as well function," she says. In Japan this
tradition is called Mingei. It is a folk art tradition my parents
shared with me, and I honor them by sharing it with others."
"In keeping with the Buddhist tradition, I like to tell collectors that,
sometimes, that which is most satisfying aesthetically is that which is lean
and simple," Shiba says.
