"Samurai Flag"

Japan
Ca. 18th century
Asa (linen) and silk
Large: H: 29 1/2h x W: 38 1/2h (74.9 x 97.8 cm)
Small: H: 12 1/4" X W: 5 1/2"
(31 x 14 cm)

This is a very unusual set of Japanese Samurai Battle Flags (one large, and four smaller flags). The large flag is handmade of silk with a family crest stenciled in vermillion red and black stripes on a plain white ground. The inside corners are strengthened with doe skin, as is common of all old flags. Silk stitching reinforces the entire flag, a technique called sashiko. There are four smaller flags in this set, each with matching crest and stripes on a plain white asa (linen) ground.
